Brookens Librarian Nancy Weichert and Outreach and Communication Specialist Janelle Gurnsey visited Riverton Elementary where they spent time with a Kindergarten class who adopted The University of Illinois Springfield as their college for 2012 & 2013. Nancy & Janelle talked about libraries, the role of a librarian, and the importance of reading. They also lead story time where they read 2 books to the students, “Joseph Had A Little Overcoat” & “The Way I Feel”. There was even time for a break in between reading the two books to play a fun round of “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes!” The outing was just one of our outreach efforts at Brookens. We were so inspired by the Riverton Reading expereince we are hoping to arrange more opportunities to reach students of all ages in the greater Springfield area with visits like this.
