Students, faculty, staff and community members,
Welcome to the Spring 2016 Semester from all of us at Brookens Library. The new semester brings new opportunities for you to engage with the library and the resources, services, and events we offer. We are kicking off the new semester with a table at the Spring Involvement Expo on Wednesday, January 20 from 3-6pm in the PAC where you can stop by and chat with a librarian!
We are also hosting a “makers” event Thursday, January 21 from 1-3 pm on the lower level of Brookens as part of the campus wide Open House: Student Life’s “Campus Expedition”. We will be having a paper airplane making contest and a make-and-take button-making table! Awards will be presented for “best design” and “best flight” and all participants receive a stamp for their Campus Expedition Book. These events are just a taste of what’s to come so stay tuned to learn about events taking place throughout the semester!
The library has made some important updates over the winter intersession and we are excited to share them with you:
1.) We have updated our website! The new and improved library.uis.edu was designed based on best practices in web design and user feedback, makes locating library information and conducting research much easier. If you have any questions about features or if you would like to leave your feedback please take a moment to fill out the online feedback form: Brookens Library Website Feedback
2.) You can now book an appointment with a librarian online: Meeting with a librarian just got easier for faculty and students. Each librarian now has a button embedded within their Research Guides that allows you to see available time-slots and book an appointment. Simply select your area by subject and there you will find your liaison and be able to make an appointment!
We are pleased to be able to continue offering UIS undergraduate students the opportunity to have their research recognized through the Brookens Library Undergraduate Research Award. This award was created to recognize and reward UIS undergraduate students whose academic work incorporates the use of Brookens Library’s collections and services and demonstrates exceptional information literacy skills. In addition to recognition at UIS, the award includes a monetary prize of $250. Apply Today!
It is bittersweet that we must announce the retirement of the University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services, Jane Treadwell, who will step down at the end of April. Dean Treadwell has served the University of Illinois Springfield as the University Librarian for nearly 14 years. She has been a visionary for academic libraries, an advocate for information literacy, and a mentor to those who have served under her tutelage. We wish her a bright future as she embarks on her latest adventure: retirement.
