What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?   My favorite thing about being a student at UIS is UIS provides us with a very good learning environment to achieve a higher level of education. In addition, diversity is also one of the things that attracts me. It’s really nice to meet people from different countries and get to know more about different cultures.

What are your goals for the semester? I have several goals for the semester. One of my goals is going through all classes with good grades, hopefully straight A’s. In addition, managing my time properly and avoiding late nights. Last but not least, working out!

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? It would be called “Journey”. Because I am an international student, and I’ve been in United States since I graduated from high school. I have experienced different lifestyles and have seen different scenery, which is more like a journey to me.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am involved in two clubs on campus. I am a treasurer of the International Student Association, and I am also a president of the Asian Student Organization. I like reading novels, watching movies, and listening to music in my spare time. My favorite music type is Nu Jazz.

What have you learned since working at the library? I have learned a lot since working at the library. I learned how to manage time and how to balance work and life. I will list all to-do’s on my list and finish the daily tasks step by step, which is very clear and helps release a lot of stress for me. In addition, I also learned that communication is the most important key to work as a part of a team.

What are your post-graduation plans? I am planning to attempt a master’s degree program and go on to earn a graduate degree. I can accumulate working experience while taking graduate courses. After that, I want to find a job which is related to marketing.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? The Ice cream maker.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?   I find the campus really relaxing in the summer and enjoy all the gardens and greenery. I like that this is a small school and a lot of people know each other, but the school is growing each year which is also good. Lastly, I feel like there is a lot of opportunity out here in Springfield.

What are your goals for the semester? I want to stay focused on school work and keep ahead of the curve. I want to work more and save my money instead of spending it. Lastly, I want to meet more people and make more friends.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? The Campbell Curse, because we have an inside joke in our family that whenever something goes wrong it must have been the curse . So it would just go through out our daily lives watching small mishaps.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I like to practice my Muy thai. Go bowling with friends or watch movies and sometimes work on my motorcycle

What have you learned since working at the library? I’ve learned a lot since working here. I’ve learned how to desensitize the books, put things away correctly, where all the book drops are. Book drops are the best, because you get to enjoy some fresh air while walking around.

What are your post-graduation plans? Hopefully after graduation I will get an okay job and move either back home to Chicago or another big city, I enjoy Portland a lot. Then I’d like to buy a small ranch house and when I’m done paying it off I can start to rent it out. Then I’d definitely buy myself a new motorcycle and I promised my mom when I was little I would buy her a new car so lastly that’s what I’d do.

What is your favorite item from the Library of Things collection? Most likely the mixer, because Im not good at baking but its fun.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?   My favourite thing about being a student at UIS is how small the campus is. I love being minutes away from my friends and seeing familiar faces around campus; I think it creates a warm sense of community. The small nature of the campus also means that I am getting to know the professors, especially those within my major, really well which makes me feel more comfortable when I need to ask questions or ask for advice. As well as this, it really suits me to have my house, the library, the gym, and my classes in an easy walking distance. It’s great for the planet to not have to drive everywhere and it makes me more productive.

What are your goals for the semester? My main goal for this semester is to really work on being efficient in the readings I have for class. I have planned to set aside good amounts of time each day to read and make notes thoroughly to help me as essay deadlines and exams approach. My other goal, is to stop procrastinating my essays so I can have some more time to review and get help if I need. My last goal for this semester is to set more time aside to do the things I enjoy outside of studying like reading for pleasure, drawing, and exploring some of Illinois that I haven’t seen yet!

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? I think a reality TV show of my life would be called “Unexpected”. I’ve decided on this name because life, so far, has taken me on a journey I never expected or anticipated. I always knew I wanted to write but I never would have guessed I would be studying thousands of miles away from home. I like to think I’m pretty spontaneous and my show would reflect the random, weird, and exciting adventures I go on with my family and friends.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I try to get involved in the volunteering programs the campus offers whenever I’m available, because I enjoy going into the community to hep. As well as this, I want to get involved in some of the campus recreation hiking trips this semester to help me reach my goal of seeing more of Illinois. My main hobbies are drawing, reading, hiking and going to the gym.

What have you learned since working at the library? Since working at the library I have learnt how complex the workings of a library really are. I never knew how many different roles, jobs and functions were required to make a library successful and to make it an enjoyable place to work and study. I’ve also learnt the value of teamwork in a work setting (opposed to a sports team environment) and how all our roles are intertwined and what we do effects everyone else in the team. I’ve also learnt that the library has so many resources available for students, like research help and late opening times approaching finals week, which I encourage my friends to take advantage of, as well as using them myself.

What are your post-graduation plans? After I graduate I hope to continue my studies further by either going to graduate school or entering into a graduate program where I can start to get some work experience whilst earning my degree. There is a lot I want to study at a higher level as I’m interested in refining my knowledge of literature further, but I also want to progress my skills in writing, whether that be film script writing, writing for children’s books etc. I want to write a series of children’s books somewhere down the line and I’m excited to start that journey too.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? Definitely the DVD players we can rent. I am a huge film fan and sometimes the selection Netflix and other websites have to offer just isn’t enough and I personally enjoy having that tool so I can watch the DVDs I rent at the library or bring with me from home.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? My favorite thing about being at UIS is the intimacy shared between students, professors, staff, etc. These bonds are integral to creating a unique university experience. I truly feel I couldn’t receive this type of personal care and acceptance at any other institution.

What are your goals for the semester? My goals for this semester are to focus on my academics, spend more time with my friends and family, and be more involved in my school. I did well last semester academically, but I can always improve. I’m naturally an introvert, but I don’t want to isolate myself from my friends and family. I wasn’t as involved last semester and this semester; I’m going to participate in more events from a multitude of organizations.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? It would be called “Ordinary Struggle.” I choose this name because I do face struggle on a daily basis mentally, physically, and emotionally, but these struggles are similar, if not the same as anyone else. So the show would show how insignificant my struggles are to the world at large, but also show that I’m a part of a larger network and should appreciate that more.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am a part of African Student Association, Necessary Steps, and Afro-Beat Dance Crew. My hobbies are dancing, listening and making music, and drawing. My passion is making art, especially with color pencil.

What have you learned since working at the library? I’ve learned that large institutions are composed of small parts. Though the tasks presented to me seem small and pointless, all of the tasks lean on each other to create the larger process. I feel almost like a part of a machine.

What are your post-graduation plans? Post-graduation, I plan on being an art teacher for high schoolers. Ideally, I want to be a full time fine artist, showing my work in museums. Regardless, I will always be an artist with the never ending need to create and bring others together.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? The camera provided by the Library of Things. I would like to check it out and take some photographic art.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? I really like how small the campus is. This helps me focus on my studies and avoid distractions. I also really like how personal the classroom setting is because I can easily ask for help from my professors when I need it.

What are your goals for the semester? My main goal for the semester is to be more well-rounded. I want to participate in more extracurricular activities while maintaining everything. I also want to start taking advantage of TRAC this semester.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? I think it would be called Lain’s Double Life. I spent two thirds of the year in the US and one third in Turkey so I feel like I lead completely different lives in each country. Dividing my time between two countries with different norms and cultures is really interesting.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I love learning new languages and I speak Turkish, French, German and Japanese in varying fluency levels and I have just started studying Russian. Reading is another hobby of mine and I am an avid fan of Ayn Rand’s works. I really enjoy reading about and researching aviation and spend a lot of time listening to Air Traffic Control conversations.

What have you learned since working at the library? I learned how to manage my time better and be more efficient. My social skills improved since I get to interact with so many patrons and co-workers everyday. Plus, thanks to my fantastic supervisors and coworkers, I improved my teamwork skills and learned how to combine my skills with my coworkers’ to be as efficient as possible.

What are your post-graduation plans? I have so many plans after graduation. I would like to intern at Tesla but I am also considering doing an MS in physics, nuclear engineering or computer science. I also want to move to Silicon Valley and start my own company.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? The Blue Yeti microphone. I think it is really cool that we can check out such high quality recording equipment.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?   My favorite thing about UIS is the amount of support the school provides for its students in doing their best to help everyone move forward. More specifically financial advisors and teachers especially trying to do their best for us. Unlike other universities, my friends inform me that they are nothing but a number to every teacher and advisor or faculty by far. I appreciate how personal I can get with anyone here because it’s the smaller campus vibe. People need to stop caring about others opinions on a small campus and just work to improve themselves.

What are your goals for the semester? My goal for this semester is to get another set of straight A’s even though I’m taking an extra class, I have a chair position in my fraternity, and I’m working more at the library now. I’ve taken on a healthy amount of food on my plate to say and my goal is still to be on top by the end and keep my motivation going till the end of this season of depression.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If I had a reality TV show it would be called, “The Great Unknown”. I call it this because it would honestly just be continuous episodes of lessons about reality and life. More specifically things that nobody teaches you when growing up. It would just be about all the lessons I learned from people or my own actions. I want it to show all the little things in life that no one bothers to tell you when growing up and people can maybe resonate with my decisions and how I proceed with my life. We all don’t know where we are going with life but that’s ok, I’m heading into the great unknown and just like every individual we have to find our own destiny and path for our lives.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am the Brotherhood chair of my fraternity on campus Delta Kappa Epsilon – Kappa Beta and I organize brotherhood bonding events for me and my brothers to get together and have a little fun and relaxation. I loved taking part in UIS dodgeball till it fell under the radar but hopefully, we can bring it back. I take interest in many pop-cultural fandoms such as Marvel Comics, Anime, Video games, and just all the nerdiest things you can think of, Empire Strikes Back is still the best Star Wars movie sorry, not sorry. Also, the electric guitar is one of my hobbies I have under my belt. If you know me, you will quickly realize I have a very different taste in music compared to a lot of people.

What have you learned since working at the library? What I have learned since working at the library is how understanding and supportive upper management is. What I mean by this is you don’t need to have anxiety calling off work if you have a fever or a family emergency. The staff is on your side trying to make everyday life easier at work and being that open-minded to the lives of college students. I learned how to be more at ease when it comes to communicating something serious to my higher-ups and trusting they will understand me.

What are your post-graduation plans? My post-graduate plans involve me getting an amazing job and a place to live right after getting my degree. While that is the ideal goal, realistically what I’m hoping for is to receive opportunities here through internships and other programs that can get me some experience so hopefully, after I graduate I can have the potential to be in the same level as someone who has worked years compared to me. I need all the edge I can get to be successful in the real world.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? My favorite thing in the library of things collection would have to be all the options of technology. From cameras, to ice cream maker, Brookens has an amazing collection of all your technical needs in home, and in the kitchen. Don’t ignore all the benefits your school offers you.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?   I feel that one of the greatest attributes that UIS has is the culture that is present on campus. Everyone, more or less, is very down to earth, and there are so many individuals who want to see and help you succeed. With this, generally speaking, I’d say that UIS has a very heartwarming atmosphere. One which makes it both a great facility through which to explore the world of academia and a great place to call home.

What are your goals for the semester? The academic semester tends to be a very fast paced and often intensive period of time. As a result of this intensity, we develop and grow not only as academics but also as people. Though we are all undoubtedly here for such a purpose, I believe it’s important to assess this development as it progresses. It’s too easy to get too caught up in our current activities and daily lives, consistently growing as people but never asking, introspectively, who it is that we are growing to be. As such, my goal for this semester is to try to answer that question for myself. I want to assess who it is that I’ve become, to determine how it is that I differ from who I want to be, and to hopefully find direction in becoming that prototypical version of myself.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If there were a reality TV show of my life I’m sure it would be called something along the lines of “WHY?!”. The reasoning for this is two-fold. Firstly, I’m confident that every couple minutes of each episode would leave the audience asking themselves, “Why?! Why would he do that?”, likely with no answer ever given to such an inquiry. Secondly, in its totality I think the show would make many question “Why?! Why does this show even exist?”. The true artistic principle of the show would come to fruition once both questions have been asked, as they are both analogous to how I question my own choices and existence as a whole.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am not involved in any extracurricular organizations on campus. That said, I still enjoy passing the time playing chess, making fresh pizza in my living quarters, and pondering the meaning of life and our existential role in this vast and seemingly incomprehensible universe. Needless to say, despite my lack of activity in school sponsored organizations, I still do manage to stay busy.

What have you learned since working at the library? Since working at the library, I’ve learned just how useful and great of a resource the library is for students! So much time and hard work is spent to offer as many resources and opportunities for success as possible, it’s incredible. The library can genuinely be a student’s one-stop-shop for many of their necessities. Whether they’re looking for academic support, access to information, or a means to borrow and use high quality pieces of technology.

What are your post-graduation plans? Currently, I have little defined plans for my post-graduate life. A part of me would certainly be interested in attending graduate school, should the logistics be willing, but another part of me is undoubtedly curious to explore life untethered from any scholastic institution. Either way, I’m confident that I will likely return to my home state of Michigan post graduation, at least for a time as I reflect on my time here and decide where the wind shall carry me next.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? My favorite item(s) from the library of things collection would have to be the cameras that are made accessible to students. If a student has the need for quality recording/photography equipment for particular projects, or even the desire to explore photography and video making in their free time, then they can do so at no cost to themselves through the library of things.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? My favorite thing about being a student at UIS is its class size, it helps in getting one-to-one help from the professors over the coursework. The small community size of the campus puts us in an environment where we get to interact with people from many cultural backgrounds. Also working at the Brookens Library is my favorite thing about being a student at UIS.

What are your goals for the semester? My goal for this semester is to stay focused on my studies and maintain a good GPA. I am also planning to learn a new programming language by the end of the semester. I would like to make time and workout at campus gym and stay healthy. I also would love to make time and explore different places in the United States.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If there was a reality TV show of my life it would be called ‘Live, Learn and Evolve’, as I always try to change myself into a better me by learning from my flaws and experiences.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am one of the board members of Indian Student Organization (ISO) here on campus. The organization focuses on preserving and promoting the Indian culture to the University community.

What have you learned since working at the library? Brookens Library made me learn how to live organized and manage time. Working as a Student Employee made me learn to pay keen attention to every detail and taking responsibilities. I also learned how to be kind and provide a good service to patrons.

What are your post-graduation plans? I will be graduating in Fall 2020. After my graduation, I plan to move to Chicago or Texas and start looking for jobs. I would like to find a job in my field which would mostly be in Data Sciences or Coding.

What is your favorite item from the library collection? I like the board games and technical sections from the library of things collection. Apples to Apples to Go from board games. Drawing Tablet and Sphero from technical section are my favorite things from the collection.
