Mary Jane’s Closed Effective Fall 2012

Effective Fall 2012, Mary Jane’s Café will not be re-opening for the academic year.  UIS Food Services, which operated Mary Jane’s, has said that the café was losing money and that they could no longer afford to keep it open.  While the café will be closed, the lower level door to the library from the concourse will remain open for set hours throughout the day and the space will be available during library operating hours.

Mary Jane’s Café, located on the lower level of Brookens Library, was originally opened on April 29, 2008. The café, named after the first librarian at Brookens, Mary Jane McDonald, has been an important and beloved place within the Library and a popular location for lunch meetings, group study, and special events.

Brookens Library is committed to continuing to utilize the Mary Jane’s space effectively, even without a Food Services presence.  We would love to hear your ideas about how that space can continue to meet the needs of the campus and the community.   Please provide your feedback by leaving a comment on this blog post or by sharing your thoughts here:

Mary Jane’s Temporarily Closed

I regret to inform you that December 4th is the last day that Bevande will be operating Mary Jane’s Café in the Brookens Library. We appreciate Bevande getting Mary Jane’s off to a good start and we know that many regular customers are going to miss them!

The good news is that Mary Jane’s will not be closed for long. It will open again in Spring Semester under the management of Campus Food Services.

Dean’s Post

To all our students and faculty, welcome back to campus! Over the summer, the Brookens Library has been working on an update of our web site. We hope that it’s easier for you to find library resources and services from our new web site, and if it’s not, we want to know. Please use the “Questions/Comments” link at the bottom of the page to tell us about any problems or to make suggestions about anything–from how we can improve a service to a new book that we should buy.

Also, you will be seeing some new faces in the library this fall. We are happy to welcome two new Instructional Services librarians to our staff, Amanda Binder and Natalie Tagge. They will be joined by two students, Chelsea Baker and Elizabeth Matkowski, from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who are doing internships at the Brookens Library this year.

And, Mary Jane’s is open again! Please stop by the cafe for your favorite gourmet beverage or a light lunch.

Have a great semester!

You Belong @ the Library!

Welcome to all our new and returning students from the faculty and staff of Brookens Library! The start of a new semester is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. There are so many details to keep track of, and so much to learn. Even returning students can find that many things have changed, from class schedules to roommates.

The UIS Welcome Week theme this year is “You Belong @ UIS.” As you get used to your new classes and begin to discover what groups you enjoy, and where you fit in on campus, we hope you will realize that “You Belong @ the UIS Library”, too.

There is a place for you here:  from Mary Jane’s Cafe on the lower level, providing your coffee and snack needs, to the staff of the Reference and Information Desk on level 2, catering to your research needs. From magazine, newspaper, and book Browsing Areas to comfortable study lounges with access to CD’s and Audiobooks, the library has what you need. We even have free Wi-Fi.  Check us out online at, or better yet, visit us in person. We’re looking forward to meeting you!
