Library Student Managers: A Fond Farewell!

As we complete another academic year, we are also marking the end of an era for our Student Management team: Andrew, Diamond, and Taylor.  What makes this year unique is that all three of our Student Managers are graduating. We want to take this moment to say an extra special congratulations and an extra special thank you to each of them.

The library’s Student Managers are members of our User Services team, which means they are fully trained circulation supervisors.  They open and close the library, train new student employees, provide excellent service to our patrons, plan and run student employee staff meetings and our biannual semester retreats, and so much more.  Each of them comes to work every day ready to work hard, to make a positive impact, and they’re always ready for the weirdly unexpected and unpredictable issues that can arise with each day.  They are thoughtful and responsible, and provide a much needed student voice to every decision we make in the User Services department.

As a team, they are both colleagues and friends who support each other inside and outside the library.  It has been an honor and a privilege to watch them grow as leaders, and a true joy to work alongside them.  We are better because of them, the library is better because of them, and for that, we will be forever grateful.

Andrew, Diamond, and Taylor – Thank you for letting us be a part of your time at UIS, it has been unforgettable. We can’t wait to see what you do next!

Diamond: Student Manager
Taylor: Student Manager

Andrew: Student Manager

Special Thanks and Congratulations from User Services,

Erich, Student Assistant Program Coordinator  and Sarah, Director of Learning Commons and User Services

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  My favorite part of being a student at UIS is how open and nice the student body and staff is here. There are also lots of events here that teach us about our future plans and give us yummy snacks.

What are your goals for the semester? My goals this semester have been to be more attentive to my studies in order to obtain a 3.0 GPA or higher. I am also learning to create acrylic paintings and how to do acrylic and gel nails.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If there were a reality show of my life it would probably be called “What Will Happen Next?” My days are never how I plan them, they are semi-structured but always spontaneous filled with countless adventures and experiences.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  I read and watch tutorials of paintings and how to to nails so that I may be able to self teach myself these future hobbies.

What have you learned since working at the library? I have learned how to give spot on customer service since working at the library. I have also learned how to communicate and consult with all different types of people from all walks of life. As well as being able to research properly and how to assist other with their research needs.

What are your post-graduation plans?  I plan to move to Tennessee or Texas and purchase a building to rent out and enjoy being job free for a while.

Meet the Team: Ram

Major: Biology

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? The small school allows me to create amazing friendships and lasting relationships. The University is also very helpful and understandable with my goals and offering me enough opportunities to achieve these goals.

What are your goals for the semester? I plan to graduate with my degree and apply into a radiology technician program. I also plan to get a job with my Biology degree.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If a reality tv show of my life were to exist I would assume it would be called “The Adventures of Ram Ankola”. I assume it would be called this because it is a good title to show viewers of all the traveling and daily adventures I do and plan to do.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? My hobbies include traveling and adventuring many different areas of the country. I also enjoy keeping up with pop culture.

What have you learned since working at the library?  I have learned about many of the interesting programs the library offers from I-Share to ILL books. I have also learned how to perform intelligible research using databases and differentiating between good sources and bad sources.

What are your post-graduation plans? After graduation I am planning to get a job using my degree. I also plan to apply into a good radiology technician program to obtain my certification.

Meet the Team: Francesca

Name: Francesca

Major: Philosophy/ Environmental Studies

Status: Freshman

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? My favorite thing about UIS is the fact that I can wake up 5 minutes before any class, and still make it to the room on time. I also like that we have a small community that can work together to leverage large scale change.

What are your goals for the semester? My goals are to spend more time reading for fun. It is easy to get overwhelmed with school work but it is important to take care of yourself and set aside time to reflect and read a new or favorite novel.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?  My TV show would be called Francesca: Adventures of the Womansupial. In the alternate reality where I have a TV show, I am also a woman who is half person half marsupial (I would resemble a Kangaroo).

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am currently involved in L4L as well as the Green Fee Committee. So please, please, please, email me with your sustainable project idea.

What have you learned since working at the library?  Since working at the library my research skills have really improved. Beyond helping students find resources, I have discovered all of the resources that are available to me as well.

What are your post-graduation plans?  My plan post graduation is to join the Peace Corps. I would also like to pursue a career in sustainable education in elementary schools.

Meet the Team: Jauzlyn

Name: Jauzlyn

Major: Criminology

Status: Sophomore

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  The best thing about being a student at UIS are the small class sizes. I am able to have a meaningful relationship with my professors and get extra help when needed. I am also able to quickly make new friends and create important connections.

What are your goals for the semester? My goals for this semester include making all A’s and joining more organizations. I want more A’s so that my GPA can increase and so that I can have another reason to smile. I would like to join more organizations so that I can become more involved on campus and meet new people.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?  If there was a reality TV show of my life, it would be called “Jauzlyn: Road to Her Throne”. It would be called that because I am always creating goals and finding ways to accomplish them. I am also planning on becoming my own boss one day.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am currently involved in the African Student Association here at UIS. I am also apart of Afro Beat Dance Crew, which focuses on African culture of dancing. My other hobbies include listening to music and dedicating time to children.

What have you learned since working at the library?  Since working at the library, I have learned how to be more social. I am better at communicating and starting conversations with strangers. I have also learned how the library operates from behind the scenes.

What are your post-graduation plans?  After I receive my Bachelors degree, I would like to work with Juvenile Delinquents. I want to positively impact the lives of under privileged kids. My long term plan is to earn my Doctorates degree to become a forensic psychologist.

Meet the Team: Dawson

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  I love the opportunities available for many UIS students. There are many volunteering opportunities available to all students, something that I am passionate about. It is refreshing to help the Springfield community.

What are your goals for the semester? My goals are to volunteer more than I did last semester. I also plan to focus more on my studies more then I did last semester to receive a higher GPA.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?  I like to see the good things in life, so I would call it Walking on Sunshine. It would be about my life and all the happy moments of it because I always look at the brighter side of life. Plus that was one of my favorite songs while growing up, and still is.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? Last semester I was involved in the play, the Machinal. Theatre has always been a passion of mine that I enjoy. It allows me to focus on something other than my school work and do something that gives me happiness.

What have you learned since working at the library? I learned a lot about how the shelving system works. As a freshmen I was initially overwhelmed by the size of the library as well as it seemingly complex shelving system. But as I learned how to shelf books and shelf read, knowing where everything became super simple.

What are your post-graduation plans? My post graduation plans are to most likely go to another university for a masters degree. After that I plan to go to medical school to become a doctor. My end goal is to become a heart surgeon because I have always wanted to save lives.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called?
