What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?

I like being part of a small community where I can know a lot of the people around me more closely. This campus has always felt welcoming and like home to me. I always appreciate good company!

What are your goals for the semester?

My goals for the semester are just to continue doing as well as I can in classes while enjoying my time here at UIS. I would also just like to spend more time binging TV shows and films when I have free time. I like to always make some time for good content.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?

The reality TV show of my life would be called Keeping Up With Michael Bates. People would get to see the wild things I do all day like roll out of bed at noon and turn on Netflix. Suffice to say it would be quality.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?

I am not really involved in much besides class and work. However, I have played guitar for several years. I also always make time to listen to at least one new album a day and I’m trying to get more into getting films fit in as often as possible to.

What have you learned since working at the library?

The library has taught me many things. I’ve learned many useful customer service skills working here. I’ve also just learned to have fun and not take anything too seriously as long as we’re getting done the work that we need to be.

What are your post-graduation plans?

After graduation I’m planning on pursuing a career in journalism in one way or another. Preferably I’ll move to a bigger city and just enjoy the life there. We’ll see what happens!

What is your favorite thing from the library of things collection?:

I like a lot of the board games we have, particularly Catan and Machi Koro.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? My favorite thing about being a student at UIS is how fast I was able to make friends through the Necessary Steps Mentoring program. This program helped me grow in many ways and helped me get closer with my friends who I now see more like family.

What are your goals for the semester?  My goals for this semester are to stay on track of my classes and keep my classes and activities balanced. I remember how difficult it was for me to start working at the library, volunteering/interning with the IIP and attend classes/do my homework. I learned to balance my time between all three and even though I am always busy, I enjoy my hectic schedule.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? My reality TV show would be called “Keeping Up With Sophie.” The cameras would follow me throughout my day and see the different types of work I do. Each day would be a different adventure even if it just involves finding/eating at new places.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  I am involved with the Necessary Steps Mentoring program which is a program that helps first generation college students with their transition from high school to college. I am going to be a mentor to a freshman this year for the NSMP and I am very excited! I am also involved with the Illinois Innocence Project “Illinois Innocence Project is dedicated to releasing innocent men and women imprisoned in Illinois for crimes they did not commit.” -IIP

What have you learned since working at the library? I have learned to ask a lot of questions since working at the library. Every task here is different and can involve many steps. Being a new employee at the library, I was very shy to ask questions but I needed to do so in order to get my job done in a timely manner. There were times when I thought I had the hang of things, but ended up needing to ask a co-worker who had worked here longer for help.

What are your post-graduation plans?  My post-graduation plan is to go to law school. I would like to become a criminal defense lawyer, so I need to do my three years of law school after graduating from UIS.

What is your favorite thing from the library of things collection?: My favorite thing from the library of things are the kitchen items! They have blenders, baking materials a waffle maker and much more. I enjoy baking/cooking so the kitchen items in the library can come in handy.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? I enjoy the freedom and the independent life style that I am able to have. Back home I growing up I didn’t have much freedom like my brothers, it was because I was a girl at the time and Chicago isn’t always good for young ladies. But the independent life style it helped me to become more independent and see situation thoroughly by myself without trying to call family for help.

What are your goals for the semester? Continue to stay focused and motivated by watching my motivational videos every morning if possible.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? It would be “The Sweet Life of Soulful Jewel”. Soulful Jewel is my skating name that I got over the summer. I name it The Sweet Life because you will find that my Life growing up was not really Sweet at all. I mean of course it has its moments. I name it my skating name because its a part of me in a different world (skate world). You would just have to watch the show how both words come together.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  Yes! I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. it is a huge aspect of my life. It is something I plan to continue when I leave college. I am learning to play drums so on my free time I got to VPA and get some practicing in.

What have you learned since working at the library? I have learned how the library system work. It is fairly easy and quick to learn. If I make a simple mistake my superiors correct me and now I know a way how to go about the problem differently.

What are your post-graduation plans? I plan to apply to Chicago Police Department before this time hopefully I will have my Security Certification and my certification to Conceal and Carry along with other Certifications afterwards. I also plan on applying to some Security Officers Agencies.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  UIS has a lot to offer to it’s students so it is difficult to pick a favorite. Having said that, I like to play games at the student union, I like to attend the expo’s and events that go on around campus. I also love playing Badminton and ping pong at TRAC. The library is my favorite place to watch a movie or to concentrate when I am studying.

What are your goals for the semester? This semester is going to be a tough one. I have taken 3 courses and all of these require investing a lot of time on them. So, i just want to concentrate & study as much as possible this semester and try to make sure that I maintain a good GPA. I am looking forward to learn a new programming language and a lot of other things. I would also love to visit Colorado during Thanksgiving break.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If I had a reality TV show of my life, I would call it ‘ Chill Alone’ because I appreciate time spent alone.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? My course doesn’t give me a lot of free time to engage with clubs/activities/sports on campus, however I love listening to music & watching new movies and TV shows. I play sports occasionally. I also like to go out with my friend’s on weekends and meet new people and explore places around Springfield.

What have you learned since working at the library? I began working with the library since January 2018 & I have learned a lot. I have improved my communication skills and I get to meet and see new people everyday.

What is your favorite thing from the library of things collection?: I love Italian cuisine, so someday I would love to take the pasta maker, make some fresh pasta and enjoy feasting on it.

Meet the Team: Conor

Name: Conor

Major: Political Science

Status: Senior

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? Being at a small school like UIS has given me a lot of opportunities to work closely with professors while I have been here. It has helped me develop a lot as a student and has opened up some unique opportunities for research and leadership. Small schools have benefits and drawbacks, but the contact with professors I have had has been quite helpful.

What are your goals for the semester? As a senior, I want to make sure I balance school and social life well. On one hand I want to complete this semester with the grades I should get, but I also want to make sure I am enjoying my final months here with my friends. That kind of balance can be tough, but it is important.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? Something like “Conor’s Content.” Have to like alliterative titles. Also I think about it as a musician, trying to always put out content but also trying to stay content.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I am the Head Delegate of Model Illinois Government, an organization where we debate political issues and prepare for a simulation at the capital building with all the other MIG delegations from around the state. I am also the Vice President of the Rotaract Club, a community service student organization. Outside of school I am a musician and am the drummer for a band.

What have you learned since working at the library?  Perhaps the single biggest thing I have learned since working at the library is how many services the library provides. People often think of it as just a place to check out books and do research, but it does a lot more. Learning about all the services we provide has been interesting.

What are your post-graduation plans?  After graduation I am likely going to move to Chicago and try to work a political job of some kind. Maybe with an interest group, the city, or a state representative. After a year or so I hope to go to graduate’s school, although I am not yet sure for what kind of degree.

What is your favorite thing from the library of things collection?: Settlers of Catan would be my favorite thing, even though I have never actually checked it out before. That is a good, but rather expensive game. I am glad we have it for people to play for free.

What are your goals for the semester? I want to get an A in my Capstone class. Once I have completed my degree I want to get Graduate Public Service Internship or Graduate Assistant position and apply for a Master of Science in Management Information Systems.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?  Peaceful life. Because I want to get a lot of money. Then, I will find a peaceful island to live for the rest of my life.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I like basketball and working out. I usually go to TRAC when I feel tired.

What have you learned since working at the library?  I have learned about time management and team work.

What are your post-graduation plans?  I plan earn my Master of Science in Management Information Systems and to get a job when I graduate, and to make more friends.

Meet the Team: Justin

Name: Justin

Major: Information Systems Security

Status: Senior

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? My favorite thing about UIS is the personal connection you make with your professors. They know you by name, where at other schools you usually are just a number. This is also noticeable with online classes as well. The professor is able to give much more attention to their students despite not having a physical presence

What are your goals for the semester? One of my goals for this semester is to not procrastinate on my homework. Waiting until the last minute on homework just causes stress and I’d like to avoid that. I’d also like to learn the programming language known as Python. I’ve heard that it can be very beneficial to learn it when looking for careers.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? If a TV show was made about my life it would be called “How Much Star Wars is Too Much?” I love Star Wars, so I spend a lot of my time reading books, watching movies/TV shows, and playing games about Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back is the Best!

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  I’m part of the Computer Science Club here on campus where I have participated in several cybersecurity competitions known as the NCL with our team. We’ve even placed 6th nationally. I am also involved in an organization on campus called Young Americans for Liberty, a political activism organization that fights for free speech and constitutionalism.

What have you learned since working at the library? One thing that I have learned while working at the library is to never be afraid to ask for help. If you ask for help, most often you can accomplish whatever it is much quicker. Finding a book in the library can be confusing and could potentially take a very long time, so just asking for our help is much quicker.

What are your post-graduation plans? After graduation I plan to go strait into the workforce. Ideally I’d like to work at a local business in their tech department for a while but then I’d like to work for the FBI. Also, I plan to try and get several certifications in my field.

What is your favorite thing from the library of things collection?: My favorite thing in the Library of Things Collection is the board games. Can’t go wrong with fun and games with friends!
