Welcome to Brookens Library and UIS for the 2017-18 academic year! I am Pattie Piotrowski, University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services, and whether you are a returning, familiar face, or are new to campus, I want to extend a warm welcome and open invitation to students, faculty, and staff to visit Brookens Library. Brookens Library provides comfortable spaces for group or individual study, services ranging from research consultations to interlibrary loan, and collections that are located within the library, and online for easy access from off-campus.
I encourage you to explore our web page and find just what we have for you, or contact us by stopping by or by online, and we can work with you to write a great research paper, help track down that hard-to-find piece of research, or provide access to research you need. You’ll find new resources, new collections and research assistance featured on Research Guides.
In the library, we’ve added a few new items: faster computers and colorful task chairs on all levels, collaborative work stations with monitors for easy group work, and new lockers where you can securely charge your laptop, tablet, or phone. You’ll also want to keep an eye on the events and activities we hold, including fall campus traditions such as The Friends Book Sale in September and the Haunted Library in October. There’s also newer traditions to watch for, such as a Cereal Bar during Finals Week
I hope to see you at Brookens Library or on campus, but feel free to reach out any time and let me know how we’re doing or what else Brookens Library can do to assist in your success. Best to you all.
Hello, and welcome to the 2016 Fall semester at UIS! I am Pattie Piotrowski and as new University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services I want to warmly welcome students, staff and faculty to visit Brookens Library. Brookens Library has something for everyone, from research tools and materials to collections of popular DVDs and ebooks (we even have Kindle Fires you can borrow as well!) In addition to our own collections, we provide interlibrary loan services, so we can get you what you need. Beyond collections and tools, we have a great staff of librarians who can meet with you and make sure you’re on the right research track, or even help you with that final piece of the research puzzle. Schedule a consultation for you or your study group and let us help you reach academic success.
You’ll also want to keep an eye on the events and activities we hold, including what has come to be a campus tradition – the Haunted Library – held this year on October 21. Brookens Library will be at the Campus Involvement Fair on August 24th from 4:00-6:00 pm. Stop by our table and ask us anything, absolutely anything, you want to know about Brookens and start down the path to being an academic star with Brookens Library.
All the best to new and returning students and remember: it’s not good luck that gets you good grades, it’s good library assistance! If you see me on campus, let me know how Brookens Library can best help you.
Pattie Piotrowski is the 2016 recipient of the Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year Award. The award, presented by the ILA Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries Forum, recognizes an Illinois librarian who is making an outstanding statewide contribution to academic or research librarianship and to library development. The award is sponsored by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).
Currently the President of ILA, Piotrowski has been an active ILA member since 2003 and has distinguished herself through her service to IACRL, ILA and the Illinois library community in general. As an active member of IACRL, Piotrowski participated in conference planning duties for three IACRL conferences, including serving as chair of the 2014 conference planning committee. She also served on the IACRL executive board from 2012-2015, as Vice President/President-Elect (2012-2013), President (2013-2014) and Past President (2014-2015).
During her tenure with IACRL, Piotrowski worked to create a more engaged and tangible environment for its members, including bringing the ILA lobbyist to speak at the IACRL Luncheon at the annual ILA conference, coordinating the IACRL booth at ILA conferences, and coordinating new-member recruitment efforts.
In August 2016, Pattie assumes the position of University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services at University of Illinois at Springfield. She was formerly the Assistant Dean for Public Services at The Illinois Institute of Technology’s Paul Galvin Library.
In both her professional service and her work, Piotrowski strives to create environments in which everyone—from students to administrators—not only feels welcome but also understands that they are part of a community that is dedicated to the enrichment of students’ lives. Piotrowski emphasizes that at higher education institutions, faculty, staff and administrators should be constant in their connection to their communities by remembering the significance of their roles. As she stated in a recent article on the IIT website, “I pose the question, ‘Is it really just a job? Do you believe in the mission of this university?’”
The Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year Award will be presented at the Awards Luncheon held on Tuesday, October 18th, during the 2016 Illinois Library Association Annual Conference in Rosemont.
Brookens Library is pleased to welcome Ms. Pattie Piotrowski as she joins us as University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services at the University of Illinois Springfield.
Ms. Piotrowski holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Dominican University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She will be coming to us from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she has served as Assistant Dean for Public Services of the Paul V. Galvin Library since 2006. Ms. Piotrowski is a member of the American Library Association and Illinois Library Association, and has held a number of associated leadership positions. She is currently President-Elect of the Illinois Library Association, and she brings a strong background in user-centered services and a collaborative orientation to her leadership responsibilities. She has also been successful in grant-seeking efforts, garnering support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and from the American Library Association for educational programming. Her most recent journal article, “Identifying and Articulating Library Connections to Student Success”, co-authored with Lisa Massengale and Devin Savage, was published in College & Research Libraries in March.
Ms. Piotrowski’s appointment will begin on August 1, 2016. “I am excited to be joining UIS with its rich history and student diversity,” said Piotrowski. “I look forward to building on the success of Brookens Library, and contributing to the achievements of the university system, its faculty, students, and staff.” Brookens Library looks forward to welcoming her to UIS.
