Meet the Team: Garrett

Status: Sophomore

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? At UIS students have easy access to professors for academic help. Also, the university’s location is ideal for exploring Springfield and taking advantage of it’s attractions. Additionally, there are many opportunities to become involved in student organizations or other extracurricular activities.

What are your goals for the semester?  This semester I would like to make the Dean’s List. I would also like to exercise more often. Finally, I would like to work on better financial planning.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? The show would be called “Broke, Tired, and Hungry” and would follow the lives of me and my friends during our time living in the dormitories as undergraduate students.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  I am involved in The Student Government Association, where I am currently serving as President. I also enjoy reading and running.

What have you learned since working at the library? I have learned great organization skills. Working at the library has also taught me good customer service skills and how to double task more efficiently.

What are your post-graduation plans?  After i graduate with a degree in economics i would like to attend law school. Once I graduate law school I would like to work in public service.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  I would say my favorite part about being a student at UIS is that I got exposed to different cultures as I got to meet new people belonging from various parts of the world.

What are your goals for the semester? The goals for this semester would be to attend more events happening on campus as I missed a lot of those in past semesters and also be more interactive. Also at the end of the semester I really want to land a good job.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? I feel it should be be called the “New Girl”.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies? I have just one hobby and that is reading. I am an avid reader and have inclination towards crime thrillers .

What have you learned since working at the library? Personally I feel working at the library was the best thing that happened to me at the UIS. It not only made me learn the intricacies of social interaction and helping the patrons in need but also helped me in getting involved with a team that belongs from different parts of the world.

What are your post-graduation plans? As I wrote earlier, getting a job at the end of my graduation would be the best and I really hope to get one in my field.

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  I can tell you I love many things about being in UIS like the campus in the Fall semester, the learning environment and the people.

What are your goals for the semester?  My goals for this semester is to join a club, try something new non-academic and read non-assigned books

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?  Every decision that I have taken is by following my instincts and it has proved me right in many cases so I would call the reality TV show of my life as “Follow your heart”

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  My Hobbies are one, I love playing video games on Xbox and two, I love to travel and also love photography.

What have you learned since working at the library?  The library helped me shape my Communication, interpersonal skills.

What are your post-graduation plans?  Being a computer science graduate with interest in becoming Cyber Security Specialist. I would love to see myself in the cyber security field and explore more options

Name: Noel

Major: Management Information Systems

Status: Graduate

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS? The best thing about UIS is its diversity, pleasant environment and great faculty. I thoroughly enjoy my master’s course here. Also, there are few amazing activities such as Springfest which gives you great exposure, good friends and campus awareness.

What are your goals for the semester?  This is my last semester in UIS. I’m excited to finish up my course and hopefully get a job in the data analytics domain. I’m looking forward to participate in all fun activities and take advantage of these last days of my student life.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why? I’d call it “The better ME”. When I look back at my self a few years, I always feel good about the way I have handled myself and how I have gain perspective in life today. Not just the academics, but my personality development and people interaction has quite improved. Looking forward to continue what I do best and be thankful for everyone who are part of it.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?  I’m the president of the UBF (University Bible Fellowship) this semester. I’m a part of the praise team, I like playing the keyboard and guitar. I’d love to watch and play soccer. My favorite club is Chelsea (belong to EPL).

What have you learned since working at the library?  As I belong to the Library Systems team, I had the opportunity to learn about our library analytics account. I was able to gain insights about the number of students/people who access out library website on a daily basis. Also, I learnt to interact with people and help them as efficiently as I can. Its always fun out here 🙂

What are your post-graduation plans? I’m done with studying..phewww! Mostly, look out for was job in my related field and gain some quality experience. I’d love to gain experience in top companies such as Facebook, Google or Amazon.

Name: Michelle

Major: Public History

Status: Graduate

What is your favorite thing about being a student at UIS?  

It is nice being on a small campus. This gives students the opportunity to work closer with their professors and ask more questions if need be. This also allows for the students to more easily interact with one another.

What are your goals for the semester?

To cut my caffeine intake down to one cup of coffee or tea a day and keep it there. To also make more time this semester to go to the gym and work out more.

If there were a reality TV show of your life, what would it be called? Why?

It would probably be called something along the lines of Busy Bee. This would be due to the fact that I am always buys and constantly moving. For if I am not at work or school then often times I am off trying to see family or friends.

Are you involved in any clubs/activities/sports on campus? Or what are your hobbies?

Outside of school I like to go biking, camp, read, and cook. Being a history major I do a lot of reading but when I’m not reading for class I have my own books that I like to read. I tend do do a lot of cooking and baking at home even if my baking does not always look as awesome as the pictures.

What have you learned since working at the library?

I have learned better research skills and also how to teach those skills to other students that need them. This helped me be able to help other students that are stuck on where to start in there papers.

What are your post-graduation plans?

To find a good paying job in my field. Jobs that I am interested in are either working in an archive, a library or a museum. I am also hoping to get another Master’s degree in library science once I am finished with my Master’s in Public History.

Inspiration is something which I have been receiving in every stage of my life. I am inspired from my parents and my friends who taught me how to cope with negative situations, face hurdles of life and lead to a right path.

What has working at Brookens Library taught you?

I recently joined the team at Brookens. It has taught me how to work with different people and also helped me in sharpening my communication and interpersonal skills.

What is a memorable experience you have had at the library/UIS?

Since I’m new to the team, I haven’t had a chance to have an experience that becomes an outstanding memory but I hope to create some during this journey.

I am a Computer Science graduate student with an interest in towards data analytics so I plan to get a job related to my area of interest.

I believe people with liberal thoughts and a strong approach to life are really thought provoking and influential people.

What has working at Brookens Library taught you?

I am fairly new to the team but within this short term I have learned to work within this diverse team, with people from different parts of the world. It has also helped me in honing my communication skills.

What is a memorable experience you have had at the library/UIS?

For being a relatively new employee, I didn’t get the chance to have an experience that becomes an outstanding memory but since my first day at Brookens I have loved working here with other students and my supervisors. I am looking forward to make some memorable ones during this journey.

My mother. She is a strong, intelligent woman who has been through a lot and still smiles and makes those around her laugh.

What has working at Brookens Library taught you?

After helping so many people out with research questions, I feel like I have a better grasp on the issues presented.

What is a memorable experience you have had at the library/UIS?

I went to Louisiana with some members of Leadership for Life. We got to hear the stories of flood victims and were able to help them start to get back what they lost.

Post-college plans/What do you want to be when you grow up and why?

After completing my MBA I plan to return to my hometown in Alaska and work in the tourism industry. I have grown up working for many different tour companies that work with cruise ships that come in the summer and I love the industry.

Who is the person that influences you or inspires you the most? Why?

My parents are the two people in my life that have influenced me the most. They have always taught me to dream big and showed me that anything is possible when you’re willing to put in the work. They are the reason I am today and I appreciate everything they have done for me.

What has working at Brookens Library taught you?

Working at Brookens Library has taught me how important good communication skills and attention to detail are. Working with so many different people you have to be able to explain things in a different way to different people and working at Brookens Library has helped me with that. Also paying attention to small details can make a bigger task much easier and certain tasks at Brookens has helped me with this too.

What is a memorable experience you have had at the library/UIS?

My most memorable experience at the library has been working with all the different people that come to the library. Everyone is always very appreciative when we help them, even with the simplest of tasks. It is nice when you feel that you have made someone’s day a little better.

Post-college plans/What do you want to be when you grow up and why?

I’d like to get a job with my bachelor’s degree, then go on to graduate school and work toward obtaining a master’s degree. I’m not quite sure exactly what I want to pursue in graduate school, but have narrowed my fields of study down to obtaining either a Master’s of Science in Business Analytics or a Master’s of Science in Marketing. I have always been interested in working for an organization with an admirable agenda and a difference-making, world-changing outlook. I enjoy working with data, so a profession dealing with working with data would be great.

Who is the person that influences you or inspires you the most? Why?

I’ve got to give it up to two people for being the biggest inspirations in my life; these people are my mom and dad. My parents are some of the hardest working people I know and have instilled in me the importance of working hard for what I want in life. They also encourage me to continuously learn, acquire new knowledge, and grow as a person. My parents are also immensely considerate and selfless, always willing to lend a helping hand to others. I will forever be grateful for having them in my life to look up to and have by my side.

What has working at Brookens Library taught you?

Working at Brookens has been such a great learning experience for me. I am so appreciative to have worked here during some of my college career. Working at Brookens has furthered taught me the importance of promptness, being tactful, courtesy, and good communication skills.

What is a memorable experience you have had at the library/UIS?

My most memorable experience at Brookens Library would have to be the small, daily exchanges with the patrons and my coworkers while I worked my shifts. Though small, they were significant nonetheless; it truly is the little things. I have enjoyed my time at Brookens helping people.
